Fall Prevention Awareness Month

Fall Prevention is an important aspect of caring for Seniors.   Here are some facts on falls in assisted living:

-More than 33% of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States.

-20% to 30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bruises, hip fractures or head traumas.

-Approximately 25 percent of hip fracture patients will make a full   recovery; 40 percent will require nursing home admission; 50   percent will be dependent upon a cane or a walker; and 20 percent    will die in one year.

Understanding the importance of this topic, we have focused our efforts on training our staff and residents on how to prevent falls and really dedicated April to be Fall Prevention Awareness Month.  To help kick the month off, the nurses from Reliant Home Health Care helped provide a great training to our staff and tips on preventing falls and transferring residents properly.  They also threw a party for our residents and talked with them on ways they can be aware and prevent falls.  They shared advice as simple as making sure your glasses are clean, you have a night light in your room, and that the soles of your shoes are in good condition and slip resistant.  Education goes a long way to prevention!

As an additional way to focus on fall prevention, we are inspecting each room and going through a fall prevention checklist to make sure each resident’s room is set up correctly to prevent falls and will communicate any needed changes or suggestions to family members by the end of the month.

It is our goal and mission to provide a safe, healthy, and happy environment for our residents.  We are gratful to the staff, families, and outside nurses and professionals who help us achieve this mission.

Here are a few pictures from the trainings:

    Caricatures

Today we had a caricature artist Steve Leach come to each home and draw caricatures of our residents. Our residents and staff had many laughs as we discovered what we would look like in a cartoon. Steve did a great job. You can see his artist profile and work he has done at www.steveleach.com
