Language Learning for Quality Memory Care

When caring for a Senior with Dementia it is a priority to find natural ways to strengthen the mind. While it’s no secret that a second language sharpens the mind and provides multiple advantages in life, did you know that it may actually promote better neurological health? In addition to being a fulfilling activity and a good mental workout for seniors, some scientists believe that knowing a second language confers tangible health benefits.

Language Learning for Quality Memory Care

According to an article issued by Penn State News, learning a language can be beneficial to the brain, regardless of age. In this compelling research, psychology professor Ping Li found that learning a second language actually changes the structure of the brain. These changes are thought to result in a more integrated neural network. The study examined a group of native English speakers, half of whom learned Chinese vocabulary. It was discovered that those participants who succeeded in learning the material had better-connected brains than those who did not.

An article featured in National Geographic relates another study, conducted by Ellen Bialystok of York University, which demonstrates that knowing a second language might impede the progression of Alzheimer’s. This study looks at a group of Alzheimer’s patients who either spoke one language or who were bilingual. The researchers found that, generally speaking, patients who were bilingual were diagnosed around four years later than the patients who only spoke one language. This provides compelling evidence that bilingualism slows the effects of Alzheimer’s.

These studies show us that a second language is worth pursuing not just for the social benefits that it bestows, but also for the impact that it has in making our minds sharper and better adjusted. While more research is clearly needed to unveil the full cognitive benefits of bilingualism, it’s safe to say that learning another language is definitely not going to be harmful to seniors who want to sharpen their minds.
