Moving Seniors: How To Transition Your Loved One

Moving your loved one is much more than the act of getting them into their new home. A smooth transition can take quite some time as the special person in your life adjusts to their new surroundings. When your senior mom or dad will be moving into a new residence, the following tips can make the process easier for everyone involved.

Moving Seniors: How To Transition Your Loved One

Celebrate

As the time comes to move your mom or dad, it can bring about many emotions. Encourage or help plan a farewell celebration commemorating the transition from the family home or the assisted living facility they are leaving. Spend time reminiscing about special memories and say goodbye to the home.

Create

Make the new living area as comfortable and as familiar as you can. While you may feel like purchasing all new items for space, ease the adjustment by creating an environment as personalized as possible. Bring along as many items from your loved one’s home as you can. You may consider arranging their bedroom or living area like the one they are used to. With family pictures, familiar knick-knacks, and other items that are well-known, your mom or dad will feel more at home.

Community

Visit your loved one often. The transition may take some time and the more time you spend at the new home, the easier it will be for your mom or dad. Also, spend time with the other residents and encourage your senior to do the same. By showing them you are happy and comfortable, they will soon feel the same.

Transitioning your mom or dad into an assisted living facility can take time. Do what you can to help them feel comfortable in their surroundings, and the process can be smooth. To learn more about moving your senior or our residence options, contact us
